How To Make Your Home Smell Good
© 2007 Complete Books Publishing, Inc.
Summary: Houses that smell better, sell better. How to make your home smell good.
Bakeries have aromas, stockyards have smells. Our sense of smell may be basic, but so is our
need for shelter. Not only do you want to make your house look attractive to prospective buyers' eyes, but also
smell good to their noses. The way to a man's heart may be through his stomach, but the way to a buyer's heart is
through her nose.
1. Clean your house thoroughly. Immaculate houses smell better and houses that smell better, sell better.
2. Clean or replace your carpeting, especially if you have
pets. You want prospective buyers to be able
to picture themselves living in the house. Smell-o-vision may not have been invented yet, but to
prospective buyers, a house needs to smell like home for them to make it so.
3. If your basement is like most, it has that "basement smell." Most of the time it's that musty
smell of a space that's had some moisture combined with a lack of ventilation. Sometimes that
basement smell is from mildew or even mold. See By Basement Smell for help
finding and eliminating basement smell.
4. No smoking - In the house - ever. No, you do not have to quit smoking in order to sell
your house, just take it outside. While smokers may not mind the smell of stale smoke, no
amount of perfume can hide that smell , from the nose of a non-smoker, (especially if she is
a former smoker). Stale smoke smell in your house could cost you a great buyer.
5. Bake an apple pie. Bakeries use this aroma to sell their wares and so should you.
We have tried cherry, blueberry and even rhubarb. Somehow, apple seems to do the trick.
Besides, after your showings are done, it goes great with coffee or a glass of milk.
6. Put cinnamon sticks down the disposal and grind them up. This goes well with the apple pie
aroma and the people at the local filtration facility seem to appreciate it.
7. Fresh flowers make the world a better, brighter and sweeter smelling place,
especially the part of it inside of your house.
