Siding Mold - Stucco

Summary: Siding mold on stucco can be a problem, but it can generally be removed easily and kept from coming back.
The first thing to determine is if your siding mold is on real stucco
or if the siding mold is on synthetic stucco.
If the siding mold is on traditional stucco (exterior plaster over lath that was properly applied),
you have a sound and long lasting exterior surface. Siding mold can be removed by power washing.
You can also get rid of siding mold by using a garden sprayer and a mild solution of chlorine
bleach (¼ to ¾ cup of liquid chlorine bleach per gallon of water). Siding mold can then be kept
from coming back by locating the source of the mold, remediating it, and painting with high quality
anti-
mildew/mold paint.
REMEMBER: When using chlorine bleach always wear good rubber gloves, a good respirator mask,
eye protection, and adequate ventilation. Obviously you are not going to be wearing your best
clothes, but ones that will protect your skin from any exposure.
Siding mold on synthetic stucco presents additional problems. Although the siding mold itself
can be remediated in the same way, it is very difficult to keep the siding free from mold.
Synthetic stucco is nice looking, but it is applied in sheets, like interior gypsum board,
instead of troweled on over lath. (This product, which looks very much like real stucco, or
exterior plaster, may have a skimming of material over it.) Many problems have been reported
with synthetic stucco products ranging from staining to mildew. Siding mold on synthetic
stucco is generally due to poor installation and/or lack of proper venting.
Inspectors are very aware of the long-term siding mold implications of this stucco look-alike.
Most inspectors will make a special note if your house is clad with synthetic stucco and they
will be very vigilant in investigating how well it was installed and ventilated. They will
look closely for any signs of siding mold or other contaminants and may even request
additional specialized inspections.
