Radon Home ABC's - Test for Radon
© 2007 Complete Books Publishing, Inc.
Summary: Radon is a danger to your family that you cannot see or smell.
Radon gas can be tested for either short-term or long-term. We recommend starting with a short-term radon testing kit.
Radon gas can be tested for either short-term or long-term. We recommend
starting with a short-term radon testing kit. If the radon test results come back positive,
the radon should be remediated and then retested, starting again with a short-term radon testing kit
and then doing a long-term radon test to make sure the radon gas is gone.
Radon testing kits are available at your local hardware, building supply
store or online. The short-term test will take 2 to 3 days. Following the included instructions,
you should close all of the windows and doors
at least 12 hours before beginning the test. Also, turn off all fans or other
ventilation that brings in outside air. (Normal recirculating heating or air-conditioning is okay
to run.)
Place the test kit at the lowest living level of your home. If the basement is finished and/or used
regularly, place the kit there. Otherwise use the first floor. Place the kit in the living room,
den or first floor bedroom, but not the kitchen or bathroom(s). Tuck it into an out-of-the-way
place where it can stay for the 2-3 days or whatever length of time your particular kit recommends.
Make sure the kit is at least 20 inches above the floor and away from exterior walls.
After the test period is over, seal the kit into the provided mailer and mail it back to the testing
lab. You should get the results in 2 -3 weeks.
Because the level of radon gas varies with the weather conditions and season, you should consider
retesting at various times of the year.
Long-term tests, those lasting more than 90 days, will give you a better picture of the year-round
average of radon gas in your home.
In the next article in this series we will show you how you can remediate the problem if you find
the radon gas level is 4 pCi/L or above in your home. Keep in mind: Since there is no known "safe"
amount of radon gas, you might consider radon remediation if the level is between 2 - 4 Ci/L.
(1.3 pCi/L is the estimated average indoor level. pCi/L = Picocuries per liter of air.)
